Removed from a petrol/ hydraulic loco having done little work.

A self-contained unit, it only needs an output pulley of your choice. Mounting this engine is very simple as the crankcase is flat-bottomed with 4 fixing lugs on the sides. Electric starter and battery charging with magneto ignition. Operating manual included. This engine will pull a heavy train at idle RPM, it is quiet and economical that way, although it will power all sorts of things, Wacker Plates, Cement Mixers etc.

This is something I bought for special purpose that never quite materialised.

Conect (this is not a spelling error) are well known makers of CNC small machine tools, producing machines that often went straight to Colleges, Universities and other training establishments.

To produce this Lathe, Conect began with a firm platform – a brand new Myford ML10, complete with makers stand and a new ‘Dickson’ toolholder system. The machine was then retro-fitted with stepper motors and older generation drivers run by early type software. As a training aid to a course of instruction, (99% theoretical) such machines would be run at the end of term simply to add realism to what students had been drawing and writing on computer screens for most of the year. They were hardly ever run and finding one is a pleasure as they have no appreciable wear or damage.

This particular machine fits that description perfectly – it has no detectable wear and the paint is not significantly marked. In that condition it was brought out of a College by a Manchunian CNC guru who removed the (then) outdated drivers and software. To update the machine, new drivers were fitted and wired up in a new enclosure. Today, the Lathe can be controlled using software which has become the accepted standard and the Model Engineer’s preference – Mach 3. A new 1.1 HP motor was also fitted which runs from an inverter (included) so the whole package runs on single phase 240V.

Equipment

The machine is fitted with the longer tee-slotted cross slide and comes with no less than 5 Dickson toolholders. It has a Pratt Burnerd 3 Jaw chuck with inside and outside jaws, and a 4 Jaw chuck. All of the chuck keys are present along with the original Myford manual for the unconverted ML10.

Points to note

For someone with limited space, it is worth considering that this lathe can be used manually as well as under CNC control. The stepper motors have convenient knobs on their outer ends providing easy hand operation. In effect, the package provides CNC capability for little more than the price of a good, manual only machine of the same type and size.


For transport, the lathe not that heavy and is relatively easy to part from its stand, placing it neatly into estate car or small van category.


Any dimensional questions are easily answered by checking the details of a stock Myford ML10.


You will need a control computer (Desktops are best, and the cheaper option) and a copy of Mach 3. A trial version of Mach 3 can be gotten from the ‘net for free, but it is limited to no more than 500 lines of code until you buy a licence.

The price for this machine is £895 and not negotiable, unless you feel an irresistible urge to offer more.

This milling machine was built by an engineer using parts from an engraving machine and is ideal for light use. He made the head himself, it has a 2MT spindle and is of very good quality. Table size is approx 7" x 8". This sale does not include the bench. Price is £100 or near offer. I would prefer collection but can deliver if local to Coventry, for the cost of fuel.

Mere words and pictures will never do this Loco justice.

The builder was a time served Engineer with Dowty’s of Gloucester. He soon discarded the Martin Evans drawings he began with, going off instead to the Isle of Man to measure the full sized loco up. After five years of working full time on the project he has a loco that is so well engineered, so to true to scale, it would win first prize if entered in any Model Engineering Exhibition. The loco has run on air only for two whole days and ticks away like a good clock. It is worth considering that there are only 3 known 7.25" gauge Locos of this type in the world.


It is perhaps ironic that being so dedicated to a project, to give so much of yourself can actually work against you sometimes. The loco is so good the builder will never run it. In spite of having his own Railway at home, he simply doesn’t want to get it dirty. That, along with a change of personal circumstances brought him to a decision he never thought he’d need to make. He now intends to sell Caledonia and asked me to handle initial advertising etc. on his behalf.


Anyone interested will need similar dedication, similar appreciation of what a feat of engineering this loco really is, and they’ll have to convince me to put them in contact with the builder before making any arrangements for them to see it. If you are that type of person and willing to offer a sum in excess of £15,000 (I cannot put any other character in the 'Price box) for something you frankly cannot put a price on, then write to me and we’ll see if we can go any further with the idea. I have for sale a Boxford MidiMill in exceptional condition, it has come straight from a school and has had very little use.
There are 8 collets with it, a work offset plate and two Mitee Bite clamps.
I've tested it manually and everything works fine, but there is no computer.

Smaller Herbert Surface Grinders are a rare find, especially in this condition. The tool does the job of much larger machines whilst taking up very little space. It is very easy to operate and maintain whilst being relatively easy to move around in one piece.

The machine is in very good condition and has a decent coat of paint. It came from a small toolroom and very accurate, it can grind down to tenths of a thou’. It has no damage and has been converted to 240V single phase by the fitting of a brand new motor.

Tecalamit ‘One Shot’ lubrication is fitted. The motor is temporarily wired up for demonstration only. It will need a proper on-off switch and permanent wiring.

The Eclipse magnetic table (10” x 5”) and a diamond dresser are included in the sale.

Kawasaki Generator GA 2300A 2.3 Kva. Owned from new, bought as a workshop backup measure. It has only been used for 4 hours or so during that time. I am very careful to look after my equipment, the machine looks virtually new. It has just the odd mark here and there and it works perfectly.

This machine should not be confused with less well engineered frame generators available at lower cost – it is a very well made ‘Silent run’ machine. It starts right up every time and is run by a load-reacting auto throttle. It supplies 240V AC, 120V AC and 12V DC (Handy for dead cars!) It has a low oil alert and output voltage meter, output voltage is adjustable. The machine has a 100% duty cycle (it will work all day) not found on the cheaper machines. It is quite easy to pick up and move around.

The generator was bought from Machine Mart who no longer stock Kawasaki items. The quality of Kawasaki generators is equal to that of Honda. The best comparison for its quality, performance and cost new is found on the Machine Mart website by viewing the Honda Eu 20i currently listed.

As a footnote, petrol generators are much less trouble than Diesel models, they start much more easily and readily convert to run more cheaply on bottled LPG.

Hello. I have for sale a set of construction notes for LBSC's 3.5" Britannia.

Got them in preparation for building the loco but have now decided to build a 5" design next.

They consist of A3 photocopies of the original ME articles. They were bought from My Hobby Store and apart from a couple of small creases on the last page, new and unused.
