Warning: Scams

Details:
Well there are back targeting the members who use this site. We can not give out the details that we are given but by all means you can share them between yourselves.
Unfortunately we cannot do anything about this as there is no restrictions on anyone reading these adverts.
If we made everybody sign in it still wouldn't stop the problem as the scammers, who seem to be genuine would just sign in.

What can be done is for the advertisers to be be more aware.

It seems as if the pattern is repeated.
The seller works away, fishing vessel seems to be a common one.
They always need a bank transfer.

Now a few questions:
Do they supply photographs?
Do they seem knowledgeable ?

One way to sort a scammer out would be to tell them you have a friend in the area who is prepared to collect and pay cash.
Anyone backing away from this would seem very suspect to me.
Don't use payment methods that you cannot reverse (PayPal and that type of site will protect you from this type of scam and they won't use it)
Now when a bank transfer is made and nothing happens has anyone contacted the police in the area the bank is located ? This is fraud after all.

If you do want to post information on this please visit our forums.
You can also report it to the police via Action Fraud or on 0300 123 2040
Very easy to do they collate all Fraud with the Metropolitan Police, this was a request from a person at Action Fraud.

Elliott 14M or Invicta 2M info required

Hi All,
I am hankering for a bigger Shaper such as above. However, I need to know whether I will be able to get such a machine into the workshop. Can anyone oblige me by giving me the length, width, motor size and weight. A copy of the specifications from the manual would be great, or even a link to a pdf of the manual, if there is one out there in the firmament of the www.
I already own an Elliot 10M and a Boxford 8inch. A bit smaller than the machines I used to use at work: Thule 24inch and an 18inch Ormerod.

Many Thanks in anticipation
and a BIG thankyou to the owners of this great site

Hi Adrian
Have you tried Tony's site Lathes.co.uk there is some shaper information on there. I sold a Tom Senior hand shaper a couple of years ago, always regetted it. I will be in the market if you decide to sell your 10M or Boxford

Re: Elliott 14M or Invicta 2M info required

Hi Mike
I had already looked. Nothing specific on Tony's site regarding machines bigger than 10 inch, or for that matter any specs, and at this point I wasn't really wanting to have to buy a complete manual to find out that the machine is either too big for the remaining space or the motor is too big for my Rotary Converter. This is why I have asked if anyone out there can supply me with the specific info I require to make a decision.
By the way, I will keep you in mind for the Boxford if I do decide that a 14 inch will fit into the workshop as won't have room for everything
Best Regards
Adrian

Re: Elliott 14M or Invicta 2M info required

Hi Ade

Have you found a machine already that you want? if not, I have an elliot 14HR I may sell when it comes time to move my workshop in about 5 months, I cannot be of much help about its size as im not near it at the mo, but it did come in through a normal size doorway on a pump truck no problem.

Cheers

Re: Elliott 14M or Invicta 2M info required

Hi John
Many thanks for putting up the spec sheet, it is very much appreciated. It has let me see that I will be limited to a 14 inch machine because of motor HP. My Boost Rotary Converter is rated to 3hp. Overall length and width is less of an issue. I now just have to find one at a reasonable cost.
Best Regards

Hi Kevin
Never come across the HR designation before. Can you tell me the differences between the 14HR and the 14M. I am interested in your machine, we just need to find a way to communicate directly.

Adrian

Re: Elliott 14M or Invicta 2M info required

Hi PJ
My Elliot is also a metric machine...strange thing is that one revolution of the toolslide feedscrew is 3mm but one revolution of the crosslide feedscrew is graduated as 3.2mm. Makes you surmise that they were using up their imperial crosslide feedscrews...waste not want not.

Re: Elliott 14M or Invicta 2M info required

Hi All,
Just a quick note to say that having narrowed down motor size as the limiting factor (thanks to JohnS for the info) I have picked the Elliott 14MR as the selected weapon of choice.
Following on from that, again, through this forum, I have been able to source a machine that suits my requirements and have "shaken hands on the deal" as it were (Thanks Kev).
Just looking forward to arranging time and date for the uplift.

I would also just like to say that I am amazed at the amount of hits this thread has had in a few days. Just lets you see that there are still people out there that have an interest in Shapers.

That being the case...I wonder if there is need for a UK based Shaper contact point...possibly through this forum? (what do you think, JohnS & AdamS?)
I know about the Metal Shapers Group on Yahoo and there are a few other threads out there...however, they all tend to be based across the pond. Are there Shaper "nuts" out there in the UK that would like to "chat" on a more local basis?
What do you all think?
Regards,
Adrian

Re: Elliott 14M or Invicta 2M info required

yes i would think so,i too get frustrated at every speck of information read via web posts and groups is u.s. based.
there are so many makes of english shapers, there is bound to be interest.
but having resources already available on other sites is no reason not to include something here ?

Re: Elliott 14M or Invicta 2M info required

There's a few people who frequent MadModder who are keen shaper-ers, at least a couple are here in blighty and a few 'old-Colonials'.
I've got one too (10M) and find it quite a therapeutic machine to use, a background swish-clack while you get on with something else gives at least the perception of multi-tasking, 'though 'something else' is usually drinking a cuppa while watching it :-)

Richard

PS, would you be the PJ with a GHA grinder? Small world eh...

Re: Elliott 14M or Invicta 2M info required

Hi PJ,
Glad to find a like-minded individual who is also a 10M owner. Let's now see who else decides to come out of the "shed".

By the way...seen the photos of your late model 10M, it's a cracker

Just noticed a new post from another Elliot "nut"...Hi Richard, welcome aboard. If nothing else, at least we now have a "threesome"
Anybody else out there who wants to come out and "play" in the UK?
Regards,
Adrian

We don't want to have too many forum subjects that everyone just uses the general and never bothers with the others. That said I like the idea of having an area for people with similar interests to post about their hobbies. So under Projects I am adding a sub-group called Shapers so if you want you can post in here about your adventures. It won't be just for Brits as alot of people are using British machines else where and we can't stop them coming to this forum.
