Warning: Scams

Details:
Well there are back targeting the members who use this site. We can not give out the details that we are given but by all means you can share them between yourselves.
Unfortunately we cannot do anything about this as there is no restrictions on anyone reading these adverts.
If we made everybody sign in it still wouldn't stop the problem as the scammers, who seem to be genuine would just sign in.

What can be done is for the advertisers to be be more aware.

It seems as if the pattern is repeated.
The seller works away, fishing vessel seems to be a common one.
They always need a bank transfer.

Now a few questions:
Do they supply photographs?
Do they seem knowledgeable ?

One way to sort a scammer out would be to tell them you have a friend in the area who is prepared to collect and pay cash.
Anyone backing away from this would seem very suspect to me.
Don't use payment methods that you cannot reverse (PayPal and that type of site will protect you from this type of scam and they won't use it)
Now when a bank transfer is made and nothing happens has anyone contacted the police in the area the bank is located ? This is fraud after all.

If you do want to post information on this please visit our forums.
You can also report it to the police via Action Fraud or on 0300 123 2040
Very easy to do they collate all Fraud with the Metropolitan Police, this was a request from a person at Action Fraud.

Morning Kev (aka Sherlock)
See you are still busy...sniffing out the Shapers for us all...thanks

On the subject of the new forum...It's alright for all you young guys, or technophobe's...you lot pick up on all this "new stuff" instantly...unlike us "old fart's"...where it takes us a bit longer to get our "head" around it all.

As an example: For my sin's...and much to my daughters' annoyance...I cannot even "text" with my phone...I just lose the "plot". But there again...most of the time I don't even have my mobile switched on...again, much to my daughters annoyance. When she challenges me about it...I just reply that if I need it...then I will switch it on...
I think she has "given up" trying to change me now...

Adam,
Thanks for the pointer to the "quick post"...that's what I was looking for...DOH!
Easy...when you know how!

Regards,
Adrian (Neebs)

Morning Ade no worries mate, on my down time, I like to have a nosey about to see whats around, I must admit i'm curious to know where Richard Shute found for sale the 18in Brittania?, because I cant find it on the web!! perhaps it was word of mouth.

Re: New Shaper Topic

Hi Kev,
I'm not surprised your curious about the Brittania that Richard mentioned. I must admit that I went "sniffin aboot" for it as well!
The Brittania's were very well appointed Shapers...absolutely massively made! You don't see them about these days...in fact, I can't remember seeing one for at least 20 years.

Re: New Shaper Topic

Evening chaps,
sorry, been out in the shed playing today - well, re-building a shed actually so not quite as much fun as it could have been, but nowhere near a key-board. I came across the Britannia via one of the auction finder lists, but once the auctionis over the listing evaporates so there's no enduring reference to it. There's a pic attached.

Re: New Shaper Topic

Hi Richard,
Thanks for posting the pic of the Brittania...one question...

How did you manage to "post" the pic?

I have been trying to reply to "Drew" on his post about cutting internal keyways...

That's four times today I have written up my reply to Drew...went to "attach" the pic from my album of pics...then nothing...I just "crash and burn" every time...

Getting just a little bit cheesed off now...I am running Windows 7 and IE8...

Re: New Shaper Topic

Hi Adrian,
yes, I had three attempts at it, one caused by my naff ISP dropping the connection...
Anyway.
Reply as you would, write some stuff (now at the top of the page, I _will_ get used to it),
click Attachments just below the text box,
click Choose and give the pic a name and click submit. That seems to put your pic in the system somewhere as all pics I have ever uploaded are listed, but as you have found it does not post it.
This is where I fell over the first time,
next you have to click the green tick opposite the thumb-nail of your pic in the column where it says Action. A help text pops up which says Insert.
Close the picture selection box (black screen with the pic. list in the middle and submit the post or carry on typing.

I only found it by accident and it seems to reduce the picture size, but it's adequate. I'll have a read up on the Agora site which Adam pointed out when I get a mo.

Rgds

Re: New Shaper Topic

Hello Chaps,
a couple of things occur to me - been a busy morning!
In view of Adam's need to terminate the previous Topic, it seems there maybe a limit to the length of a Topic, perhaps the number of posts or its overall size. Whatever the reason, it might be better if we took more trouble to have more Topics with specific subjects, it would probably also be easier to follow as well, compared to various subjects interlaced within a topic.
An obvious candidate would be Machines for Sale by Third Parties.

Just a thought....

Re: New Shaper Topic

Hi folks,

I'm back from holiday and struggling with the Boxford again but those of you who have been following my overheating and vibration problems (particularly Ashley and Richard) will be glad to know that I've got it tamed.

I drilled and tapped the motor pulley for a grub screw directly above the keyway, carefully aligned the motor and countershaft pulleys and slackened off the primary drive belt a bit. I fitted rubber washers either side of the motor mounting foot (hope they don't melt!) and either side of the cabinet where the bolts that fix the motor cradle go through.

Still a fair bit of noise and some vibration (both countershaft pulleys are visibly eccentric) but the "thrashing" sound has gone and I can live with what's left until I'm sure I'm going to get some use out of the shaper.

However, one step forward and two back! My NVR switch is playing up. I made it in, according to the inscription on the PCB, 1990 - when I had the energy to do things like that - and I used the best components money could buy (although I got them on the surplus market). It worked for more than 10 years on my old Archdale mill and has been working on this shaper until yesterday. When I put the motor back I had to re-wire it to the NVR switch and when I re-fitted that into it's box it worked once and then no more.

I took it out and checked it on the workbench and guess what? It worked perfectly. Put it back and no go. It seems to have developed a sensitivity to orientation - works OK horizontally, won't work vertically although it has always been used vertically.

I have a suspicion that one of the rectifying diodes has popped and there isn't enough power to energise the relays properly (one of them anyway, the other seems to energise OK).

The switch is sitting in it's box in the bottom of the motor cabinet and is working there. I think I'll leave it there until, as I said above, I'm sure that the shaper will be of some use to me.

Regards,

Brian.

Re: New Shaper Topic

Brian. Was going to tell you that cheap NVR switch plus overload switches are available at Machine Mart for about  £25 however I can't find them in the online catalogue, I think Axminster do them as well though .  I usually find mine on Ebay or like you make them, but I use 240 volt coil contactors or 24 Vac ones if I have a small transformer handy.  I have a large box of industrial switchgear bought at the local auction for very little money that I can normally find suitable buttons.  Quite honestly I reckon £25 to machine mart is the better option as I have spent ages making up suitable enclosures. However glad you have tamed the beast for very little money. I'm still looking for a Shaper but it has to be local to me but there again I'd like to upgrade my milling machine as well so I'll see what pops up.

Re: New Shaper Topic

Message for Drew (Andrew Wilding)

Sorry Drew...Despite reading Richards "tips" on how to post pics...and Adam's step by step...I am still finding it impossible to load pics, on this new system, to support my reply to you, on your request for information on Keyway Cutting...
and without the pics...my written reply is meaningless!

Suggest I send you a personal email...with the pics attached...at least that way, I will have answered your query.
It's just a pity that I can no longer reach a wider audience...with my explanations.

Regards,
Adrian (Neebs)

PS Anyone else who wants a copy...send me a pm (you will get it through my profile)

Re: New Shaper Topic

is this the one you are after http://www.homeworkshop.org.uk/components/com_agora/img/members/110/mini_Keyway-Toolholder.jpg

Code:

[url=http://www.homeworkshop.org.uk/components/com_agora/img/members/110/Keyway-Toolholder.jpg][img]http://www.homeworkshop.org.uk/components/com_agora/img/members/110/mini_Keyway-Toolholder.jpg[/img][/url]

It uploaded fine but I think you might have something blocking the script from sending the link to the message window. Altho the window does close after you click the insert button and go back to the reply window that's behind the blacked out area around the box.

Signatures are in your profile.
Goto profile in menu on left, then hover over edit near the top of the page, then update profile, select forum tab and enter your message.

Re: New Shaper Topic

Hi Adam,
Yes that's the first pic I was going to use. I still had a couple of others on my PC to "pull down" to "My Pics" on your server...but as I couldn't get the first one to "insert" into my post to Drew...there was no point in trying any more.
By the way...when the attachment "window" was opening...it was taking the full screen of my PC...I was totally unaware that there was a black border and a "close x" in the top right hand corner...because I just couldn't see them! However, even when I was "hitting" the "insert" button...nothing happened...and the "window certainly wouldn't close...and take me back to my post...hence the frustration.

Also must say thanks here to Richard for trying to help me as well and highlighting that there should be a black border visible.

Thanks Adam
