Warning: Scams

Details:
Well there are back targeting the members who use this site. We can not give out the details that we are given but by all means you can share them between yourselves.
Unfortunately we cannot do anything about this as there is no restrictions on anyone reading these adverts.
If we made everybody sign in it still wouldn't stop the problem as the scammers, who seem to be genuine would just sign in.

What can be done is for the advertisers to be be more aware.

It seems as if the pattern is repeated.
The seller works away, fishing vessel seems to be a common one.
They always need a bank transfer.

Now a few questions:
Do they supply photographs?
Do they seem knowledgeable ?

One way to sort a scammer out would be to tell them you have a friend in the area who is prepared to collect and pay cash.
Anyone backing away from this would seem very suspect to me.
Don't use payment methods that you cannot reverse (PayPal and that type of site will protect you from this type of scam and they won't use it)
Now when a bank transfer is made and nothing happens has anyone contacted the police in the area the bank is located ? This is fraud after all.

If you do want to post information on this please visit our forums.
You can also report it to the police via Action Fraud or on 0300 123 2040
Very easy to do they collate all Fraud with the Metropolitan Police, this was a request from a person at Action Fraud.

Boxford shaper

Boxford shaper

I have recently acquired a Boxford shaper. It is in good working order.
The serial number is 63478; this seems at odds with the Boxford numbering
system given at lathes.co.uk
It is fitted with a single phase motor, so the drive is to the rear rather than inside
the cabinet (see photo)
Has anyone else got this configuration?

I just received an email from Boxford confirming the machine was built pre-1980
and appears to be an early one.

I received a reply from a member confirming that he has a shaper like mine.
The serial no. of my shaper is 6347S (not 63478)
That puts the date of manufacture as late 1956 (ie. an early one)

Re: Boxford shaper

Hi William,
Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of this configuration so I am unable to assist at this time.

However, the guys at Boxford/Denford are really good, so I would suggest that you contact them directly with your query.

You can contact them by following the link to the Boxford Spares Page:
http://www.boxford-software.com/spares/shapermenu.php

Then click on the contact tab...and send them an email via the email link.

Regards,
Adrian (Neebs)

Re: Boxford shaper

William,

I can't help with your particular machine either, but it does look interesting. I don't even have a shaper! As far as I knew Boxford shapers were Elliott/Alba clones. I went to look at an Alba for sale recently with a possible view to joining the, apparently happy band of 'shaper nuts'. It was a nice clean machine of its type, but as it was my first view I was appalled by the build and detailing, with the box and carriage on plain rather than dovetail slides and the almost totally inaccessible stroke adjustment. I notice your machine is different not only in the motor mounting but also in respect of the stroke adjustment door (much bigger) and the box vertical adjustment - on the Alba I saw, and those on Tony's site, and the one shown on the link Adrian gave you it is adjacent to the horizontal adjustment. Yours is down close to the base of the machine.

Based on the Alba/Elliott it is very unlikely I will ever get into shapers, but perhaps you will keep the forum posted on what you find about yours as I would certainly want to look again if an identical one came up.

Re: Boxford shaper

Am I missing something , should I be able to see a photo of said machine? Having just moved on my shaper  as it was a bit of a monster I too am in no rush to get another, but if a good Boxford or Elliot 10 came past shouting buy me I would of course grab it. They are useful machines albeit a bit slow, but you can do something else whilst they shape away.

Re: Boxford shaper

Ashley,

Clicking on William's name takes you to his profile. Look in the gallery; the pictures are there. Probably not what he intended, but even some the old hands have trouble with photos!!
