Warnings

Warning: Scams

Details:
Well there are back targeting the members who use this site. We can not give out the details that we are given but by all means you can share them between yourselves.
Unfortunately we cannot do anything about this as there is no restrictions on anyone reading these adverts.
If we made everybody sign in it still wouldn't stop the problem as the scammers, who seem to be genuine would just sign in.

What can be done is for the advertisers to be be more aware.

It seems as if the pattern is repeated.
The seller works away, fishing vessel seems to be a common one.
They always need a bank transfer.

Now a few questions:
Do they supply photographs?
Do they seem knowledgeable ?

One way to sort a scammer out would be to tell them you have a friend in the area who is prepared to collect and pay cash.
Anyone backing away from this would seem very suspect to me.
Don't use payment methods that you cannot reverse (PayPal and that type of site will protect you from this type of scam and they won't use it)
Now when a bank transfer is made and nothing happens has anyone contacted the police in the area the bank is located ? This is fraud after all.

If you do want to post information on this please visit our forums.
You can also report it to the police via Action Fraud or on 0300 123 2040
Very easy to do they collate all Fraud with the Metropolitan Police, this was a request from a person at Action Fraud.

Adcock & Shipley Universal Machine Tool

Re: Adcock & Shipley Universal Machine Tool

A quick update on the Large A&S Universal Machine..
I still have the  gearbox in pieces. I am embarrassed to confess that it turned out it was a self inflicted problem.
I had been facing off some cast iron billets late one night, and the leadscrew ended up covered in messy cast iron swarf. I was cleaning it off, and put the leadscrew in gear to make it easier to get all around it. What I hadn't realised was that the 4 way lever on the gear box wasn't fully engaged, and I'm guessing that it dropped down to some intermediate position, which meant I was trying to run the gearbox at two different speeds, and the gearbox didn't like it!  It's particularly galling, because if I had been doing a screwcutting job, I would have double, nay, triple checked my gear settings. When I realised what had happenned, I didn't stop swearing for about a week.
Anyway, the end result was that the gear change shaft inside the constant mesh gears jammed. I have taken it all apart, (not easy on a machine that I don't think has been apart since it was assembled back in the 1960's ) and I have sorted the gear change shaft problem (which was an almost invisible ridge near the keyway slot, caused when the drive dog slammed into the keyway) and the change shaft now operates smoothly as before.

However, there is still some other fault, as I'm not getting any drive from the main shaft into the 12 speed box. I think I may have a broken drive pin somewhere....
(I have to say, having spent so much time renovating this machine, I got a bit p****d off at this point and just left it for a few months. I also got side-tracked by alternative projects, such as a part built 7 1/4" gauge 0-4-2 steam loco, and a Bridgeport milling machine.)

I will get there in the end, but I'm really wishing I hadn't bothered to clean up the machine that night!

Re: Adcock & Shipley Universal Machine Tool

hi Dave,

I am sorry to hear about your mishap - take comfort in the thought it could have been worse. It sounds like you may have sheared a drive pin as you say, or even a shear pin to fend off worse disaster in case of overload. All extra work of course in finding it but I am sure it will come right in the end. And a 7 1/4 loco! big stuff (by my standards anyway!)

take care

Peter

Re: Adcock & Shipley Universal Machine Tool

Update: The large A&S Combination machine is back up and running again.

Problem was a 1" dia. sheared shaft..
http://www.homeworkshop.org.uk/components/com_agora/img/members/190/mini_broken-shaft.jpeg

I had to make up a stub shaft replacement
http://www.homeworkshop.org.uk/components/com_agora/img/members/190/mini_repair-kit.jpeg

Everything is all back together again, and no bits left over, which is always a plus with a gearbox repair.
Have also made a mental note to myself NOT to use industrial machinery late at night when I'm too tired and my brain is switched off...

Anyway, just used the A&S mill to repair some rack teeth on a Bridgeport Ram casting, so the shaft repair looks to be solid enough.

Re: Adcock & Shipley Universal Machine Tool

nice solution Dave - I shudder to think of the torque needed to shear that. Lucky it wasn't worse - such as teeth on gears! But I am sure we have all had our mishaps! I know I have.
