Scam Warning PDF Print E-mail

We are getting reports of people still getting emails about the adverts they are putting on the site, I have added a few to the list so you can see the type of email that is being sent. Most of these emailers just want you to respond so they know they got a valid email address before selling it. The best thing to do is just delete them or report them to the host, gmail take this very seriously and so do hotmail, both address for reporting are in this post

Best method if you don't trust it, bin it.

Please be aware of them and read more to see examples.

There has been another fresh spate of attempted scams.
They seem to follow a simple pattern.

  1. You receive an interested email asking for details/ pictures
  2. The next email confirms the purchase.
  3. Then they want to send too much money, arrange for their "shipper" to collect the item and that you can forward the balance.
  4. They rarely negotiate on the asking price.

The key elements to look for are:

  • Poor use of English (although it's a rather sad reflection on educational standards that many non-scammers can't spell either)
  • Repeating the whole name of the item, as if they don't really know what it means ( see the repeated use of "Boxford 4.5" lathe, CUD Mk1" in the example below)
  • The use of Western Union Money Transfer. They may be a legitimate company but scammers seem to love them. Paypal has banned it so draw your own conclusions
  • Please note that they have started to use female names. They change names and email addresses almost daily.

What to do:

  • Ask the potential vendor for phone numbers etc (they use Yahoo/ Hotmail type addresses as a rule because they're disposable and untraceable)
  • Don't be afraid of ignoring them
  • If their offer is too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Be very careful
  • Report them to the provider of thier email address. Quick way is to just try You need JavaScript enabled to view this e-mail address. for hotmai, msn, live, yahoo and gmail. They need the full email including headers so best to just forward as attachment to them.

Examples of scamming emails:

Example 1:
