“Matrix” Type TS Universal Pitch-Measuring Machine, by Coventry Gauge
& Tool Co. This item is in excellent condition, having been
purchased from a university metrology department some years ago. It is
capable of measuring internal and external threads up to about 8”
diameter (200mm) with very high accuracy, both Imperial and Metric.
(Whit-form and USS, 4-40tpi; Unified, 4-36tpi; Metric, 0.5 – 6mm pitch;
BA, 0-6; CEI, 20-40tpi.) The machine is exquisitely made, and
absolutely complete with original cabinet stand, with accessories
storage and glass cover, and full set of all the original accessories
and standard reference thread. The accessories include a Burnerd
high-precision 3-jaw chuck, currently well over £600 new! Also
included are the original manuals, NPL-traceable test certificates for
both machine and reference thread, and the NPL machine specification.
It’s very hard to price a rarity like this, and I’m not looking for
anything like its real value, as I would rather someone had it to use,
and I had the space! I’m open to negotiation on price so by all means
contact me to discuss this. It’s “small lathe” sized, and you would

describes a modified Cornish type of boiler (Design No.3 in the
appendix). He states that 'it was one that he had designed a good few

I know this may be a long shot but I'm am looking for a 1 1/16" x 16
TPI Unified form die, either carbon or hss and preferably split type
but I will take a solid or dienut. It needs to be in reasonable
condition but not necessarily new as I've only got a couple of existing
threads to extend (hence I can't cut them in the lathe and be sure of
the match) so a slightly used one will do. It must be Unified form,
Whitworth isn't a close enough match for this job. I've rung around the
normal suppliers and this seems to be a special on long delivery, etc.

A workshop clear-out has produced the following items to date!
1) Unimat lathe bed, complete with cross-slide and both feedscrews.
Probably a Mk4 – cast-iron, not die-cast. No head or tailstocks.
£25, collect, or P&P at cost.
2) A number of Emco Compact 5 CNC items.
i) bare lathe bed, vgc. £25.
ii) Lead ballscrew + bearings and mounting blocks (no stepper motor).
Good condition. £15.
iii) Compound-slide, complete with cross-slide ballscrew, toothed
drive-pulley, drivebelt (no stepper motor) and toolpost mounting plate.
Very smooth. £30.
iv) Headstock complete with cowling, motor mounting plate, and
countershaft pulley. Bearings good. £15.
v) Tailstock. Incomplete – just the casting and barrel. £5.
vi) Emco 5 CNC CD-Rom from Tony Griffiths (lathes.co.uk), containing
electrical, mechanical and parts manuals together with original
instructor’s and student’s manuals and exercises. £12.50,
post-free.
I can probably post any of these items at cost, but collection is
better if possible. I also have an electronic control console for this
machine, but it is damaged and sold for spares only. £5,

Last month I requested ideas for a clutch system for my Atlas 6” lathe,
and I would like to thank everyone who came up with suggestions. I
ended up with a very simple and cheap idea which I thought maybe of
some assistance to others. Although is looks very “Heath Robinson-ish”,
it works extremely well and my fear regarding belt wear was unfounded.
As my drive motor hangs on a pivot plate (which gives the drive-belt
it’s tension and has a clearance of 1.25” over the bench), I decided to
lift the motor to disengage the drive. This I achieved with two tapered
wedges, one attached to the underside of the pivot plate, the other on
a pivot arm that rests and pivots on the bench, this ensures that when
engaged, the motor is securely held in place. A push arm runs along the
bench under the lathe which when pushed in engages the motor, and when
pulled back lifts the motor, thus disengaging the drive. I also
utilised the idea that Graham Howe(ME4320 dated 29/2/2008)come up with
to contain the drive belt when the motor is disengaged, and it works
well in conjuction with my wedge design. I made the wedges and pivot
arm from Tufnol, as it acts as a self lubricating bearing surface, and
as the wedges are wearing in they are becoming smoother and easier to
use. I made this whole device from odds and ends that I had laying
around, and my only expense was my time. Thanks for taking the time to
read this, and thanks again for the massive response I had to my
original enquiry.

say it will tackle most materials without hesitation. Surface rust has
accumulated whilst in storage, but this can be removed quite easily,
and all bearings and slides move smoothly and freely, and appear to be

I'm looking for the HSS "part of a disk" type thread cutting inserts
where the edge of the tool is ground to match the thread shape and you
simply grind the flat top of a sector to sharpen the tool. I'd
especially like the Dormer / SKF versions having two complete thread
forms on the cutting edge, the few I have are about 1 3/4 inches
diameter and numbered 1188-3. I'd also like a single point 60 degree
insert for the Andycraft / Denford holder. These appear to be
unobtainable new. Thanks.

When I was in the forces in Holland some of the people that had been
there during the occupation told me that during the war when there was
no petrol available many local businesses continued to operate their
trucks by putting some sort of boiler in the back which produced "wood
gas" which was collected and fed into their engines. I have been trying
for some time now to find out more about these boilers, how they
worked, how the gas was collected and fed into the engine, in fact
anything at all. Eventually I would like to try and produce a small
scale copy of one to see how well it worked. I was told that each time
they stopped, the driver would chuck a few logs into the thing and it
would go on producing the gas to drive the vehicle. If anybody knows
anything, has any photographs or drawings or information, please get in

Milling/drilling attachment for a TOYO 360/Proxxon/Record Lathe. This
little milling head is designed to fit behind these lathes and turn
them into a mini machining centre. It is also still, with the addition
of a compound table, available as a stand alone vertical mill. This
particular head was bought to do one job and has run less than 2 hours
from new. Complete with collet chuck but no collets. These are
available either from Proxxon of Rejon machine tools. The bracketry to
fit it behind the lathe has gone missing but would be easy to
fabricate. Pictures available on request. I think it cost me about
£400 two years ago so £175 seems a pretty fair price.

Ajax 8" horizontal mill, bench mounting, 4 speed vee belt drive. This
is a robust little mill, about the same size as a Centec 2, with a
dovetail overarm, and the choice of lever feed or screw feed on the
longitudinal table travel. It has a 1" spindle and some spacers, and
has recently been overhauled and painted, so is ready to work. Choice
of 1 phase or 3 phase motor! also comes with a part built vertical head
attachment, the head itself is virtually finished, but the attachment
to the mill needs to be built. The guy who was making it unfortunatly
passed away, and didn't leave any drwaings, so you will have to sort
that out yourself! Machine will fit into a reasonable size car boot for

tested by our club and failed its test at 150lbs/sqin on some top
external stays. I do not have the equipment or the skill to replace
these stay rivets. The boiler is for sale without a certificate but

Hi everyone. I am again looking for some advice. I have an excellent
10" Atlas lathe and I am wanting to somehow make a clutch to the drive
system so that I can leave the motor running whilst stopping the chuck.
This will obviously reduce the electricity costs as well as prolonging
the motor life, but I can't for the life-of-me see how it can be done
easily without wearing out the vee belt very quickly. I'm hoping that
one of you have had this problem in the past and have a simple

are too good and expensive to use as fire-wood. They are a useful size
for making handles and they turn beautifully giving a superb
redish/brown grain. They are also an ideal size for such items as
pull-cord handles, lace bobbins, wooden pen/pencils, small button feet,
etc. I have some 300 random pieces 1.25” x 1.25” (with or without the
corners removed) and between 3” and 5” long (some may even be longer)

I have still a “Heathway” 4.25” glass-working lathe to sell. I believe
that this is an early 1980’s machine and just prior to storing, it was
given a full service. It is fitted with two scroll chucks, and whilst
there is some wear in these chucks they still run true when gripping
glass. The lathe is short bedded and fitted with a full length rear
tooling bar, which is unusual for a lathe of this size. An on/off
switch, together with a forward and reverse variable speed control
knob, are fitted as standard. This machine came out of a laboratory
workshop so has seen very little production use. I am based in
Hampshire, but I can arrange commercial transportation at cost if

rebuilt) - must be finely engineered and in excellent condition, not
necessary that they be capable of being steamed - to add to collection
of UK purchased Clarkson LNER A3 & A4, Jackson LMS Princess and
LBSC BR Britannia and A1/1 Hielan Lassie. No issue with paying well for
top quality. I travel to UK a couple of times each year so no problem
in meeting interested sellers. Does anyone know the whereabouts of the
Dennis Evans built 3½ inch gauge Duke of Gloucester? Also wanted
to buy: complete set of drawings for LBSC’s “Pamela” – his 3½
inch gauge rebuild of the Merchant Navy Class Pacific; also two
Clarkson A3 drawings; nos. PAC/5 (Engine brakes, Bogie, buffers) and
ST/3 (Standard non-corridor 8 wheel tender). I am also trying to decode
a 3½ inch gauge boiler marking – “HC&S – 84” (possibly Harry
Clarkson & Son 1984? – I thought Clarkson’s had been sold by 1984).
