For Sale: Harrison 11” (L5A) Toolroom Metal Working Lathe

Fri 31st Jul '20

Advert ID: 38341

Machines (Large Tools)
On offer, an excellent Harrison 11” (L5A) lathe. Absolutely not the usual load of rusty junk sold on eBay, this is an exceptionally good example with no discernible wear in the ways. Everything is smooth yet tight, nothing wobbles about and the machine is capable of very accurate work. The machine has power feeds for both sliding and surfacing (both directions) as well as a full screw cutting capability.

This model is the last of the L5A lathe series, designated the 11” as it is an Imperial machine, it is a 3-phase model with a 2-speed motor. This is the Mk 4, the last of the L5A series and these were manufactured from 1957 to 1966. Very few had the high-speed headstock option (this does) and will turn from 45 to 2000 rpm from the 2-speed motor. The headstock is the American L00 fitting which is far safer than a screw fitting for the chucks, the chucks can be run safely in either direction with no risk of coming loose.

The lathe is totally original, the paintwork has never been retouched or repainted completely as many others have. You can see the years of handling rubbing the original paint off. The lathe has always been kept in a well-insulated and heated (in winter) dry workshop and used for nothing greater than model engineering tasks for all the time I have had it (several years now).

It comes comprehensively equipped with the following:
  • 6” Bernard 3 jaw self-centring chuck with internal and external jaws
  • 9” Bernard 4 jaw independent chuck (almost new and only been used twice)
  • L00 type spanner for fitting & removing chucks
  • 5C collet tube, draw bar and chuck to enable any 5C collet to be used with the lathe
  • Expensive and as-new USA made Dorian BXA wedge type tool post with 10 tool holders (some Dorian, some Chinese copies) and a range of lathe tools to cover all jobs, all with inserts and lots of spare inserts. The tool post now costs nearly $500 US.
  • Excellent condition face plate and drive catch plate
  • Tailstock drill chuck, centres, chuck keys and other bits
  • Harrison lathe manual

If you have a 3-phase supply this machine will plug straight into it. If you haven’t, I can also offer a ready to go 5HP Transwave rotary converter to run the machine, that is what I used. This machine is offered as I am no longer doing any model engineering and it seems a shame to leave it unused when another enthusiast can get years of pleasure using it. I had 2 Myford lathes before the Harrison and there is no comparison. The Myford is a toy compared to this machine, the Harrison is immensely strong and will do any job you ask of it. Remember that you can always do small jobs on a large machine but not necessarily large jobs on a small one.

Ideally the lathe should be collected. I can lift it with my engine crane and it can be put on a low loader type trailer, I probably cannot lift it high enough to put it in a van unless the floor of the van is very low. If absolutely necessary, I can probably put it on a pallet for shipment by Palletways or similar but the lathe is longer than the largest normal pallet so it might be difficult. Lots of information on the machine is available on the ‘lathes’ website.

It would be ideal for model engineering, a small machine shop or for farm work. It will need collecting from Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire.
